Expertise Provided: Civil, Sanitary Engineering, Surveying

Century was responsible for providing an engineering study, and the necessary design engineering to prepare all preliminary and final Construction Documents for bidding, including plans, specifications, and estimated construction cost, for a new Sludge Collection Basin with 150,000 gallons of sludge storage volume, and a 800 g.p.m. pumping station and 6-inch force main, to pump the sludge to the basin from the existing Water Filtration Plant at the Perry Point VA Medical Center.  The purpose of the basin is to provide a means of storing and dewatering sludge from the Water Filtration Plant which is the product of the flocculation and sedimentation treatment process.  Century obtained all permits and approvals including compliance with all MDE requirements.  Construction services included shop drawing approvals, site visits, and consultation during construction.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Designing the pumping station within an existing empty previously abandoned structure at the Water Filtration Plant.
  • Designing the site for the sludge collection basin within a limited available area.
