Bethesda Trolley Trail Pedestrian Bridges Over I-495 and I-270
Owner: Montgomery County
Location: Montgomery County, MD
Expertise Provided: Structural and Pedestrian Trail Design, Public Meetings

This project featured the design of a new steel one span pedestrian truss bridge over I-495 and a new steel two span pedestrian truss bridge over I-270 in Bethesda, MD. A truss was chosen by the community because it is architecturally consistent with the history of the trail that served as a local trolley commuter railroad route as well as providing an enclosed environment for pedestrians and bicyclists traveling over the highway. The truss design also provides maximum clearance over the roadways while minimizing the heights of the approaches to the bridge.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Designing a 190-foot long single-span Warren truss over the Capital Beltway (I-495) and a 270-foot long two-span Warren truss bridge over the East Spur of I-270 utilizing steel tube sections.
  • Coordinating with SHA personnel to address design, fabrication, and construction concerns with this project as well as adjacent SHA construction projects.
  • Investigating the effects of heat cambering vs. bending large tube chord sections to the desired shape.
  • Developing community "buy in" to the project from the various affected communities and trail users to develop a "consensus" for the final design of the bridges and trail.
