I-695 Outer Loop Bridges
Over Wilkens Avenue and
Benson Avenue
Owner: Maryland State Highway Administration
Location: Baltimore County, MD
Expertise Provided: Structural Design, Construction Consultation

Century's design efforts for the widening of the I-695 Baltimore Beltway from Frederick Avenue to I-95 include replacement of the Outer Loop bridges over Wilkens Avenue and Benson Avenue.

Challenges Encountered:
  • I-695 Over Wilkens Avenue - Bridge No. 3119

The I-695 Outer Loop Over Wilkens Avenue four-span bridge was replaced with a two-span continuous plate girder bridge.  The bridge was raised and subsequent roadway design performed to provide the required vertical clearance over Wilkens Avenue.  The “delta” shaped flared piers were designed and spaced to provide support for two girders per pier, which when placed along the skew allows for an aesthetically attractive and functional pier.

  • I-695 Over Benson Avenue - Bridge No. 3113
The I-695 Outer Loop Over Benson Avenue three-span bridge was replaced with a single span plate girder bridge.  The proposed bridge has semi cantilever curved abutments to match the Benson Avenue alignment with aesthetic treatment consisting of pre-cast panels on the wing walls to match the MSE retaining wall/noise walls at each abutment.
