CNX Marine Terminal - Pier 2 Rehabilitation

Owner: Consol Energy
Location: Baltimore, MD
Expertise Provided: Marine, Structural, Geotechnical

This project involves the rehabilitation of a 90 year old finger pier that is an integral part of a coal transshipment terminal. Originally constructed in 1916 by the Canton Railroad Company to be an ore and fertilizer unloading pier, it was modified and expanded several times over many years into its present configuration. In the early 1980s the property was purchased by Consol Energy and the pier was modified to accommodate a 7,000 stph coal shiploader and conveyor system. Our recent rehabilitation work included pile evaluation and remedial repairs designed to extend the life of the pier into the 21st century.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Researching record documents to establish the history and identify the various types of modifications previously performed to the pier.
  • Working with a local diving company to establish criteria for a general and detailed pile inspection program.
  • Evaluating existing conditions and establishing a phased repair approach to create an economical on-going pier improvement program.
  • Developing simple, buildable and durable designs suitable for a very aggressive marine environment.
  • Monitoring daily construction work to ensure that the ship loading activity will continue without interruption throughout construction.
