Canton Maritime Services redeveloped an under-utilized finger pier at the CNX Marine Terminal to accommodate a new, 168,000 square foot, break-bulk cargo warehouse. The finger pier was originally constructed by Canton Railroad Company in the early 1900s. It is an earth-filled structure surrounded on three sides by a 25-foot wide timber pile-supported relieving platform. Redevelopment included filling the pier to raise the warehouse elevation above the 100-year flood plain and construction of a membrane-covered, frame-supported, pre-engineered building structure. This unique structure consists of a structural steel pipe "skeleton" covered by a tensioned, PVC-impregnated, water-tight fabric skin. Bituminous paving was used to create the interior floor surface. A multiple bay loading dock accommodates tractor trailers.
- Designing a new facility to comply with a very limited budget and aggressive permitting and construction schedule.
- Applying for and securing the required permits from the City of Baltimore, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Commission in record time.
- Developing an innovative site design that incorporated vegetative ground cover and other features to improve the water quality of surface runoff.
