MTA Open End Geotechnical Engineering
Owner: Maryland Transit Administration
Location: Statewide, MD
Expertise Provided: Geotechnical, Construction Materials Testing, Subsurface Exploration, Geophysical Testing

Task assignments include:

Old Court Maintenance Facility:  Provided geotechnical engineering consultation and materials testing during construction.  The project consisted of constructing a new 2-story maintenance building, paved parking areas, retaining walls, and several pre-engineered storage buildings.  Services included evaluation of soft foundation soils and provided recommendation for undercut for footings, provided field testing for compaction of soil fill, observed proof rolling prior to paving, and provided recommendations to undercut and backfill for paved areas.

MARC Train Extension to Frederick:  Provided geotechnical engineering and construction oversight services for the new rail line extension to the City of Frederick in the Karst area of Frederick County, and for a new overnight train storage yard.  Subsurface exploration services included test borings and geophysical testing to evaluate the risk of sinkhole development, designed a sinkhole mitigation program and provided construction oversight during construction.

Overlea Bus Loop:  Provided geotechnical engineering services for design of a bus loop off and shelter in Overlea.  Services included test borings, laboratory testing and recommendation for pavement and shelter foundation.

Modular Block Wall Failure:  Evaluated the cause of failure of a retaining wall adjacent to the MTA Light Rail Track and provided recommendation for repair.  Also provided litigations support to identify responsible parties.

Light Rail Vibration Study:  Conducted a study of vibration for a house adjacent to the Light Rail track.  The homeowner was complaining the train passing by was causing the house to shake resulting in damage to the structure.  A seismograph was used to monitor vibration at various locations in the house and a structural inspection identified the condition of the structure and document areas of distress, and a report prepared.

Challenges Encountered:
  • Design in Karst areas; design of a mitigation program to reduce the risk of sinkhole development near the rail track.
  • Geophysical testing and analysis.
